Common Mistakes in Mobile Designing

by spark on

2e1ax_simplistic_entry_bigstock-Eraser-2280444The use of mobile websites has increased rapidly. Life without mobile is now hard to imagine and life without the internet makes us feel something is missing. The importance of mobile websites has increased significantly. Website designers, therefore, should be cautious enough to avoid some crucial mistakes while designing a website for mobile. Here are some highly useful tips that should be kept in mind while designing a website for mobile devices.

1. The tap-targets should not be less than finger size:

The fact that some people have large fingers and thumbs while others have small raises the question of; what should be the ideal button size? A minimum standard has been set for this i.e. 44 pixels square. This is a minimum recommended touch size.

The problem occurs where the designer wants to fit all the things on the screen. This effort makes the tabs and button much smaller. Much smaller tap-targets create one more problem that the clickable tabs or icons are very near to each other.

Such problems can be avoided if the tap-targets are at least 44 pixels square or more. The main thing is the target area, not the button itself. The target area can be increased.

2. Avoid slow loading pages:

This really frustrates the users. In this fast era, almost everyone is surrounded with a number of chores at one time. Do not embed large image files or heavy background images that make the loading of the startup screen unnecessarily long.

3. Avoid extra wording:

The mobile devices are much smaller as compared to LCDs/TFTs. The extra wording makes things much too complicated, making it hard for the user to understand and focus on one thing. The web designer should focus on simple phrasing and brevity. HTML is ideal for this because it contains commands such as paragraph breaks () to dissect and arrange/ bind words. Also representing ideas using bullets, arrows, and briefing in small lines is also a good strategy.

4. Filtering the features:

Adding too many features makes mobile website designing look ambiguous and annoying. This is because many of these features have redundancy. Same things are repeated with different and inter-related names. To overcome this issue one should filter the features. Before starting, make a notebook and note down every idea in your mind, even if it looks tiny and unnecessary. Then have a keen look on your ideas and eliminate redundancies. Select the best features that sound good.

5. Don’t implement the same designing method for every device:

It should be kept in mind that all mobile devices are not equal. They have different sizes and different features. Therefore they provide different user experiences. The web experience on the Samsung Galaxy is not the same as on the iPhone. So keep in mind which device you are going to design for.
